What is Perinatal and Postpartum Depression and Anxiety?
Perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety are depressive and anxiety symptoms that are experienced during pregnancy and following childbirth. These are very common conditions and ones that can leave a new mom or a mom-to-be feeling extremely confused. A common hype about pregnancy is that the new mother or mother-to-be should be "glowing" or overjoyed about becoming a mom or being pregnant. However, if the woman is feeling overwhelmed, sad, tearful, and highly worried, she may feel like there is something wrong with her and she may be left feeling excessive shame about feeling the way she does. The reality is that pregnancy can be difficult, both physically and emotionally, and the first few months following childbirth can often be overwhelming, difficult, and a very stressful (and sleep deprived) transition. If you are experiencing feelings such as anger or irritability, loss of interest in the baby, feelings of guilt, crying and sadness, or excessive worry, nervousness, or anxiety, you might be experiencing perinatal or postpartum depression or anxiety.
How therapy can help you to feel better
Sometimes perinatal and postpartum depression and anxiety can go away on their own; other times, a mom-to-be or a new mom may need help to work through her emotions. Women often find that nobody wants to talk about the difficulties of pregnancy or the stress of becoming a new mom, which can lead them to feel alone, isolated, and guilty. Our therapists have helped new moms work through their emotions, develop coping strategies, and successfully manage their stress and feelings both during pregnancy and following childbirth. You are not alone in how you feel and dealing with these heavy and difficult emotions on your own can lead to your condition getting worse. Our therapists can help you feel better and more equipped to move through this unique journey of motherhood.
